What is the EVP Program?
In essence, the program offers a one-off payment to women and children leaving a violent relationship equating to $5,000, being up to $1,500 in cash and the remainder available by way of vouchers for goods, services or direct payments towards school fees, rental bonds or other items deemed essential in establishing a “safe home”.
The payment is not considered taxable or reportable income and does not affect any other social security payments from Centrelink.
Am I eligible?
The eligibility criteria includes:
- Financial stress; and
- Evidence of domestic violence (which includes but is not limited to a referral from a family and DV service provider with a risk assessment/safety plan, ADVO or police report.

Has the EVP Program been effective?
We note Domestic Violence NSW has published a recent report on 31 May 2022 highlighting concerns with how financial support for victims of family violence has been delivered by the EVP Program. Their recommendations for reform include the introduction of specialist services to run the program and to provide cash to victims rather than vouchers. The full report can be accessed here.
